BEFORE YOU BUY

Buying appliances online? Check first.

Avoid appliances with an unknown origin, missing information or suspected non-compliance with Hong Kong safety requirements.

Appearance and listing photos cannot establish compliance. Ask the supplier for supporting documents when details are unclear.

Check the brand, model and ratings

Check the manufacturer, voltage, frequency and power ratings. Hong Kong homes use 220V, 50Hz. Do not connect a 110V product directly; confirm its rated operating range.

Choose an appropriate plug

Socket-powered appliances should generally have a three-pin plug meeting Hong Kong requirements. Specified two-round-pin products for bathroom shaver supply units have separate provisions. A universal adaptor does not establish safety.

Ask for documents matching the model

Household electrical products supplied in Hong Kong require a Certificate of Safety Compliance. A CE mark or a seller’s claim of certification alone does not confirm compliance with Hong Kong requirements.

Check records and keep receipts

Check EMSD product safety and recall information. Keep the model, seller details and receipt. The voluntary register is not a mandatory approval list; absence from it does not itself mean non-compliance.

How many extension sockets are safe? Check the total load.

Neither three nor six sockets guarantees safety. More sockets do not increase the total load capacity. Check the extension unit and wall socket ratings, manufacturer limits, and the combined load of appliances used at the same time.

Use only one extension unit or adaptor per supply socket, without daisy-chaining. High-power appliances should use a dedicated fixed socket. Stop using a unit with loose sockets, scorch marks or overheating.

What about extension units, heaters and fixed connections?

High-power appliances should use a dedicated fixed socket without sharing it with other appliances. Do not daisy-chain extension units. Use a registered electrical contractor for fixed electrical connections. Stop using products that are scorched, deformed, overheating or giving off unusual smells, and arrange inspection. For smoke, fire or immediate danger, see the emergency guidance below.
